Why Now?
Why now?
2021 provides us with a unique and vital moment in the fight for environmental change. Weekly we are seeing more and more evidence of the irreversible damage that climate change is having on our common home. In the last few weeks alone, we have seen forest fires, floods and deadly hurricanes devastate different parts of the world.
Around our world severe and long-term droughts, floods, rising sea-levels and extreme record-breaking temperatures are clear evidence of the damage that our actions and our way of life are inflicting on our world. These events have affected millions of people, most often in the poorest countries of the world and people who have done least to damage our environment.
Now, with the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change declaring a “code red” alert for humanity ahead November’s COP 26 conference, it is our turn to respond to the “cry of the earth and the cry of the poor”
But it is not too late for action. As we approach the meeting of COP 26 it gives us the chance for our voices to unite and look at ways we can take the call for action back to our parishes, schools, and communities to create a different legacy for the next generation.
That is why we are proud that the Laudato Si’ Centre will help Salford lead the way in educating, informing and inspiring people on ways they can heal and care for our common home.
The land, woodland and unused buildings on the estate of Wardley Hall allows us to provide a space that will help people to learn how they can take practical action to tackle climate change and work towards a sustainable world.
As we embark on this ambitious project, we want you to join is in your homes, communities, and schools. As well as sharing our journey we will be sharing resources, ideas and events that will help you make a difference in your own life.
